Elmwood Shooting Suspect Found Dead In Knox County

FIRST REPORTED 7:22pm 3/25/14 A shooting near Elmwood in Peoria County has resulted in the death of the Sheriff Department’s top suspect.

Peoria County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call in the 9400 block of Cedar Bluff Road in rural Elmwood, today.

The Sheriff’s Office there was notified that a 79-year old male had been shot.

At the time of the incident earlier this afternoon, Peoria County Officials were searching for a suspect. That suspect was identified in a press release as 53-year old Debra McCawley. She was considered to be armed and dangerous as investigators attempted to locate her whereabouts.

Multiple outlets have reported she was taken into custody by the Sheriff’s Department , but according to Knox County Sheriff David Clague, they are now dealing with a death investigation involving McCawley.

Her body was located in Knox County near what Clague said was Maquon. Knox County, Peoria County, and Illinois State Police are cooperating in the investigation.

Clague says the Knox County Sheriff’s Department currently has no reason to suspect foul play in McCawley’s death, but would not describe the nature of the death or any further details surrounding the incident.

Knox County Coroner Mark Thomas says an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
