Three arrested in weekend traffic stop

Police arrested three Galesburg men over the weekend after a handgun with a filed off serial number and a small amount of marijuana was found during a traffic stop.

Galesburg police reports show officers conducted the stop early Saturday morning in the 500 block of West Brooks Street after 26-year-old Jovan Eugune Cook failed to properly signal.

Upon a search of the vehicle, a loaded 9mm handgun with the worn down serial number was found under the driver’s seat.

Cook was arrested and ticketed for a number of charges including defacing a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and an expired driver’s license. He is held in the Knox County jail on $35,000 bond.

Three passengers were in the vehicle and police say the smell of cannabis was detected. One passenger, 22-year-old Isidro Hernandez, threw a small baggy of the substance onto the grass during the stop. The amount was later tested as 3.4 grams of cannabis. Hernandez has been charged with possession of controlled substance.

A second passenger, Orlando Javier Hernandez was also arrested on a valid warrant.
