205 Board goes forward with most of $3.2 million in cuts

While last night’s votes were not “final” and “binding” 72 of 75 positions that Superintendent Ralph Grimm proposed be cut, were approved by the board to go forward.

The only one of 44 recommendations that was shot down was the elimination of the GHS hall monitor position which is paid $17,000 a year.

Four votes were also tabled for later consideration, including differentials for department chairs at the high school.

Last night’s votes directed the central district office to move forward in attaching names to positions.

Member Wayne Statham told those attending these are difficult decisions.

“Not every decision we make is going to please everybody,” said Statham. “We really are trying though to do the best we can.”

Member Jean Ann Glasnovich tells WGIL her mind wasn’t drastically changed by anything last night, but she’s cautious as to not cause unintended consequences with cuts.

“I may have been on the fence a little bit not knowing which way to go and may have been swayed, but it has been a tough week because it is an agonizing process to go through.”

Nearly 100 educators and community members were present for last night’s meeting, several of them speaking about the effects proposed eliminations would have.

Next month the board will vote on which cuts to finalize.
