District 205’s plans to replace resigning Welty

In executive session of last night’s District 205 Board meeting Secretary Rick Welty, the second most senior member of the board submitted his resignation to the board president, effective immediately.
Law dictates Superintendent Ralph Grimm must formally notify Regional Superintendent Jodi Scott of the resignation in the next five days.

The Board has 45 days to reach a consensus on a replacement at which time if they still haven’t, it becomes Regional Superintendent Scott’s responsibility.

There is a provision that if a board member has a large enough amount of time left in their term that a special election must be held to fill the seat.

However, Grimm tells WGIL that he believes Welty, who’s term expires in April 2017, has too short of a period left in his term for that.

“I’m almost positive there will not need to be a special election, that the board can make an appointment to that position.”

Grimm says that Welty was a strong board member.

“He did his homework, he listened to people, he asked good questions and really that’s all you can ask from a board member.”

But he also respects Welty’s resignation citing personal reasons.

“And I have no doubt the board going forward will choose a strong candidate to fill out his term.”

The resignation came on the heels on a board meeting last night where 39 of 44 proposed cuts were approved to go forward.
