County receives bid to repair courthouse fire escape

The Knox County Building Committee has found fixing the fire escape at the Knox County Courthouse the source of continual headaches.

The aspirin for those headaches may have been found out of the blue in the form of a Boston based company.

The committee was taking bids but Co-Chairman Greg “Chops” Bacon tells WGIL all bids that came in were unsuitable.

“We got a couple of people that said they could do it, but they would have to take the fire escape down off the building, take it back to their shop, refurb it and take it back–well, that would leave us no fire escape so we couldn’t very well do that.”

Until the contractor saw that the county was struggling finding bids for the fire escape.

“He went by and looked at it on his own time and said he could do it,” says Bacon. “He could leave it up there and have it done and do it for such and such amount of money. We are going to at least meet with him.”

The cost will be at around $80,000-$90,000, a considerable savings compared the nearly $500,000 it would take to buy a new fire escape.
