With the March 15 primary around the corner, political hopefuls are taking lengths to make their campaigns known.

James Marter, the owner of a software consulting company, is running against incumbent US Senator Mark Kirk for the Republican nomination next month. During last night’s Republican rally at the American Legion Hall, Marter was joined by Knox County Tea Party President Patrick Harlan, who is running for the US Congressional seat occupied by Cheri Bustos.

Before addressing the crowd of more than 60 supporters, Marter told WGIL he doesn’t have much in the way of traditional political experience, saying that’s “a good thing this election cycle.”

“I’m a business owner,” he said. “I can tell you one thing, in business, there’s a lot of politics going on.”

Marter adds that he hopes to bring fiscal conservatism to Washington.

“We have a national debt problem over $19 trillion in debt,” Marter says. “We have $83 trillion in unfunded liabilities and we need candidates going to Washington who will become those representatives of the people who will make sure that Washington is not spending the money we don’t have.”

During the rally, attendees submitted their informal votes for the Republican presidential nominee in a straw poll. Ted Cruz won over Marco Rubio by one vote, 21 to 20.
