GFD warns against flooding hazards

April showers bring May flowers, but with those showers often comes flooding–sometimes severe.

Just last week, Galesburg saw heavy rain and the Galesburg Fire Department and city are urging residents to use precautions this Spring when it comes to flooding, especially while driving.

According to information from the city’s website, flooding is the number one cause of death related to severe weather in the U.S.

The GFD warns to not drive through flooded areas and even if a road covered by water seems shallow enough to cross, it’s not wise to do so.

A few tips to remain dry include monitoring road conditions before getting in the car and keeping emergency items inside. If your car stalls, do not attempt to push it out and seek higher ground.

The recent warnings are in correlation with the U.S. National Weather Service’s “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” public service announcement.
