Police say ‘knock out’ game not involved in battering of Galesburg teen

Galesburg police say they see no evidence to support a claim that a local teen’s recent battering was in connection to the game, “knock out.”

A 15-year-old Galesburg man reported a battering on August 18. The teen was walking on Duffield Ave. with a friend when he says a male came up from behind and punched him in the face.

The punch knocked out a number of teeth and severely broke his jaw.

The mother of that teen spoke with KWQC-TV and claimed the assault was a result of the “knock out” game, where an assailant punches someone in a random act as a part of the game.

GPD Capt. Rod Riggs tells WGIL that they don’t see it that way.

“We have no indications that this had anything to do with any type of knock out game,” Riggs says. “That wasn’t initially reported. The first I heard of it was through the media. If the mother of the victim has some type of information that she would like to give us that would lead us to something like that, I would encourage her to come talk to us about it, but we have absolutely no indications that this was part of any type of game.”

A police report on the incident does not include an account mentioning the game.

Riggs adds that in their investigations they have seen no other reports of the game “being played” around town.

Authorities say they do have a suspect in the case and are investigating the individual. They do not believe the incident to be a random act.
