Wataga man to be charged for heroin use in Wednesday crash

Two Wataga men were taken to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, following a head on collision yesterday in the 1200 block of Lincoln St. near County Highway 9.

Twenty-six-year old Jack Lawton will be charged with a number of offenses, including aggravated driving under the influence and driving under the influence of drugs for allegedly causing the crash while intoxicated with heroin.

Police officials say Lawton was headed north on Lincoln St. when his vehicle crossed the center line striking the vehicle of 55-year-old Charles Hendricks who was headed south. Both vehicles were totaled and were thrown into ditches on opposite sides of the road.

Police found Lawton with a syringe and say he was treated with the overdose emergency drug Narcan at the scene. A foil that contained less than a gram of heroin was found, as well.

Lawton suffered a broken sternum in the crash and will be officially charged when he is released from the hospital.

Hendricks broke his wrist, a rib and punctured a lung.
