Authorities investigate death of Galesburg woman

Police are investigating what has been labeled as a “suspicious death” after a 78-year-old Galesburg woman died, last night.

Authorities responded to 946 S. Seminary Street around 5:28 p.m. to find Sandra Huff unconscious, in a bed.

Several attempts to revive the woman were unsuccessful. A family member who was present in the home told police that Huff had not wanted to eat or drink for about a day. Huff had also allegedly complained of stomach pain and had dry heaving spells — occurrences that were out of the ordinary. Huff hadn’t reportedly been to see a doctor in two years.

According to a police report, authorities say the family member gave “inconsistent statements,” in regard to when the woman went to sleep and in relation to Huff’s mood, behavior and possible illness. Though, they also say the subject displayed a variety of emotions and showed signs of confusion.

There were no signs of physical harm to Huff. There were also no signs of heart attack or stroke.

Knox County Coroner Mark Thomas will conduct an autopsy, “due to a lack of information on Huff’s health” and a “lack of signs of the cause of death.”
