Health department ends fiscal year in the black

The Knox County Health Department and the health clinic within the department had a positive fiscal year.

Public Health Administrator Michele Gabriel says the department will end the year with a surplus of $382,500 that can either be placed into reserves or can be used moving forward.

The health clinic is roughly $35,000 in the black, which Gabriel says was done without any supplemental funding from the health department.

Gabriel told board of health members at their monthly meeting on Thursday that she is “extremely pleased.”

“Management staff did an extremely good job cutting budgets and cutting staff,” Gabriel says. “Operating short when they could and even when they couldn’t.

The health department is also looking toward a celebration for next year.

“November 3rd of 2017 will mark the 25th anniversary of the successful referendum that formed the health department,” Gabriel says.

Gabriel told board members that preliminary plans are underway to observe the anniversary throughout the year. That will be done through promoting public health reminders of things that health department has done since it formed in 1992.

The health department has not formally observed an anniversary in 15 years.
