Inspiration for military funeral legislation honored in Springfield by Rep. Swanson

A young man who inspired state legislation allowing high school and middle school students to miss school to play Taps at military funerals was honored as an honorary page in the Illinois House on Wednesday. Alwood High School senior Jack Buman was hosted and honored by Rep. Dan Swanson in Springfield. Bumann has played trumpet at several dozen military funerals throughout the state. The high school senior had written a letter last year to then-Representative Don Moffitt which eventually resulted in the passage of a new law. Moffitt explained at the time that students who missed school to play at a soldier’s funeral were counted absent which affects a school’s state aid. He went on to say that it made it easier to make sure a military family could find a musician for the funeral if they desired. Swanson also recently presented Bumann with a replica Civil War bugle after a Civil Warn veteran remembrance event in Andover. Bumann plans on attending Illinois Central College in Fall 2017 to major in business and play golf.
