Financial strain at Sandburg remains even as MAP is appropriated

As of Saturday Sandburg had received about half of their funding for Monetary Award Program grants.
However, when it comes to state aid the community college has only been appropriated money, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll get it in cash-strapped Illinois.

The other revenue source for them is from property taxes.

President Sundberg says that in her tenure the trustees have worked to keep their levy constant, the lack of state aid and stagnant property values in the district have left Sandburg in a bind.

“We actually planned for this year with no state money and I’ve been reluctant to say that because I certainly don’t want everyone to think that we can get by with no state money because we’ve had to make cuts to services and we’ve had to close one of our facilities,” Sundberg says. “So there have been pretty severe consequences.”

One of the results is a shrinking of the marketing and recruitment budgets.

A frequent criticism of cash strapped schools, even when short sighted, is to cut administration.

Sandburg has one less VP than they did a decade ago.

Sundberg says that despite the popular narrative, she’s confident that Sandburg doesn’t have a bloated administrative staff.
