Area Superintendents make plea for pre-k education funding

It came out last week that school districts in the area would be seeing funding reduction for preschool educational opportunities.

In total, WGIL was informed that that the Region was being cut over $2.5 million for early childhood education.

ROE #33 Superintendent Jodi Scott says that in many cases expanded preschool education classrooms were being closed in any districts.

District #202 Superintendent Steve Wilder said that because of the cuts, they will be going back to half day programs for Knoxville.

Another area that is being cut include the ROE’s Family Services program.

Wilder said that he and neighboring district administrators went to the State Board of Education meeting to comment on the cuts.

ROE #33 Superintendent Jodi Scott said that she felt that ISBE was empathetic to their pleas, but said that she wasn’t sure they knew what the next step was to get funding to them. An appeal has been filed in hopes to get the programs funded.

As it stands now most of the districts in the region would be cutting their expanded pre-k programs. In many of the cases it will see reducing the programs to half-day.
