Music Makers puts up music legends tribute art on building

Music Makers in downtown Galesburg is always full of music and people that make it.But now owner Dave Plunk says they’re putting up a set of large paintings on the side of his building that reflect his personality and that of his store while beautifying the downtown

There are five paintings in total; four each representing a pioneer of their instrument; Ray Charles on piano, Jimi Hendrix on guitar, Buddy Rich on drums and Plunk’s all-time favorite musician, Jaco Pastorius (Jock-O Puh-STOree-US), capped off with a blue electric guitar bearing the store’s name.

He says it should be highly visible when you’re on Seminary Street or headed west on Main Street as you emerge from the Sibley Underpass.

Plunk says it was their goal to line up the unveiling of the artwork close to the date of the Underpass’ opening.

For the first three years of Plunk owning Music Makers he would commute daily from Peoria.

“As I would drive down Main Street and approach Seminary Street, I would always envision in my mind that that would be a great place for either a painting or mural of some sort on the side of the building because it’s clearly visible,” Plunk says. “It was just a vision and a dream.”

He turned to friend and local artist, Dusty Scott, who among other projects recently contributed three paintings that are displayed in Monmouth College’s Huff Center.

Scott has been researching ways to make the paintings as durable as possible.

They’re on plywood with aluminum cased frames and he consciously used paint that would still look go od even after inevitable sun fading.
