Rural Galva man charged with Murder following early Tuesday crash and confrontation

A rural Galva resident is now charged with first-degree murder after authorities say he shot a man he got into an altercation with Tuesday.

Court records indicate 58-year-old James Love has formally been charged with First-Degree Murder, and had his bond set by a judge Wednesday at $300,000

Knox County Sheriffs Deputies responded to a crash early Tuesday a few hundred yards away from Love’s residence. Love and 19-year-old Xavier Hartman of Galva somehow got into an altercation at the scene, and Love allegedly shot Hartman.

Authorities say an autopsy preliminarily revealed that Hartman died from a single gunshot wound to the thigh, after the bullet struck a main artery.

Love remains jailed and is scheduled for preliminary hearing July 17th.

A person with Hartman at the time of the crash was interviewed by authorities after initially fleeing the scene and is so far not facing charges.
