Despite delays, Farnham Bridge project moving along

There’s been lots of progress made on the Farnham Street Bridge replacement project. Director of Planning and Public Works for the City of Galesburg Wayne Carl says there were a couple of holdups at the start of the project. “We had some delays on getting started,” Carl said. “The contractor had to submit all of his lifting plans and demolition plan to BNSF to get approved and there’s a certain format. So that took a lot longer than he anticipated. Because it was so hot early in the year, that contractor had to do some work at night when it was cooler so Ameren would be able to shut down a power line.” While awaiting approval, the contractor was able to reconstruct retaining walls for sidewalks on the south side of the bridge. All the deck beams for the new bridge were set a week ago Friday (October 12th) – next the concrete deck will be poured later this week. Carl said the contractor will be doing some cold-weather protection during the concrete pours. After that, new curb and gutters will get poured followed by an asphalt overlay. The asphalt work with new approaches to the bridge should take approximately three to four weeks – that is, if cold weather doesn’t hamper plans. Lanes of traffic are expected to be open by the start of December.
