GPD investigating ATM robbery attempt

Galesburg Police officers are investigating an attempted ATM robbery that happened over the weekend.

Officers were dispatched to Thompkins State Bank at 1380 N. Henderson Street for a suspicious incident on Sunday at approximately 5:49.

Once on scene, officers made contact with a complainant who told police he found the bank’s Automated Teller Machine lying on its side with the back torn off. Officers found the ATM partially in the middle lane and on a concrete divider.

According to the police report, the ATM was observed to have “significant damage,” with an indentation that appeared to have come from a vehicle bumper. Damage was also observed to the concrete median and deep gouges were seen in the middle lane from where it appeared the machine was pushed. The front panel of the ATM was bent, which exposed the safe.

Bank personnel arrived around this time and indicated that the money was secured inside the ATM’s safe.

Officers were then allowed to see security video of the incident. The report says that the video showed a white Chevy panel van approach the drive-through from the West, behind the bank. The van pulled into the outer before backing into the ATM at an angle, causing it to fall into the middle lane. The van then pushed the ATM, getting it stuck. Two people then exit the van wearing black ski masks, black long sleeve shirts, black pants, and black gloves. They attempted to move the ATM to no avail, and then get back in the van and leave.

No arrests have been made as of 10:00 a.m. Monday. The investigation continues in the case.
