Shopko files for Chapter 11; Monmouth store staying open

UPDATE A retailer based in Green Bay, Wisconsin and has a location in Monmouth says it will be business as usual, even as it files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy reorganization.

Officials with Shopko are announcing the bankruptcy filing that will be done in Nebraska, and says while it will continue to deliver a, “exceptional shopping experience for customers,” they will do while closing 38 stores.

The nearest Shopko location in this area is in Monmouth along U.S. 34. A store closing list DOES NOT list the Monmouth store as shutting down, but does indicate stores in Burlington, Iowa, and Fort Madison, Iowa, as ones close to here that will be closing.

In addition, Shopko says it will relocate 20 optical centers to freestanding locations, and is auctioning off its pharmacy business. In some areas of the Midwest, HyVee has taken over a number of Shopko’s pharmacy accounts.

Shopko CEO Russ Steinhorst says in a news release that the decision to file bankruptcy was, “a difficult, but necessary one.”
