Firefighters battle fire on Lake Street

Galesburg Firefighters battled a structure fire at a what appeared to be an abandoned home early this morning on Lake Street.

According to Fire Chief Tom Simkins, firefighters from the Brooks Street Station arrived on scene at 188 Lake Street at around 1:42.

The fire was described as “heavy” and coming from two sides of the residence. The fire was knocked down from the outside with two hose lines and under control in about 30 minutes.

Search and fire attack teams entered the two-story building to confirm there were no occupants. Simkins says there were no utilities at the residence and hadn’t been for several years.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported, and five off-duty firefighters were recalled to man the reserve engine at Central Station during the battle.
