Music Sales Spike For The Cars and Eddie Money

Photo Credit: Daniel Locke / PR PhotosSale of The Cars’ music rose dramatically in the wake of Ric Ocasek’s death on Sunday.

Billboard reports that in the 24 hours after his death was announced, sales of The Cars’ catalog jumped up by 2662 percent, with 27,000 albums and songs sold. In the previous two days, only 1000 were sold.

Most of the album sales came from their 2002 Complete Greatest Hits album, while “Drive” was the most downloaded song. Ocasek’s solo catalog also posted gains, with 1000 albums and songs sold.

It’s expected that when streaming figures are added in, a few of the band’s albums and songs will re-enter various Billboard charts on Sunday.

And Eddie Money’s death has also resulted in an uptick of his music as his biggest hit, “Take Me Home Tonight,” has been streamed more than three-million times since he passed last Friday at the age of 70. The song was his highest charting single, peaking at number-four on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986.
