District #205 to interview school board vacancy candidates

The District 205 Board of Education will be conducting interviews with potential candidates of the board’s vacancy at a special meeting this week.

Board member Vickie Banks resigned from the school board prior to the August board meeting after having been elected in 2017.

Board members are meeting in a closed session Thursday night where Superintendent Dr. John Asplund says the board will interview four candidates to find one that will the best fit for the board.

“And by best fit too, I know the board is very desirous of trying to make sure that certain demographics and populations of folks are represented so it’s not all from a two-block radius of the town,” Asplund tells WGIL. “So, you try to get a cross-section and that’s been important to the board and I think that’s great.”

Asplund adds the board has the broad authority to interview and select one of these four candidates or, if they choose, to select someone they don’t interview.

“They can interview those four people. They can pick one of those four people. They could pick somebody that didn’t come into the interview. They can basically do anything as long as you live within the boundaries of the City of Galesburg, basically Galesburg Township.”

He says that the candidates are a varied group coming from different ages, backgrounds, and experiences.

Asplund says the board will, hopefully, have a candidate selected and seated by the October 14th board meeting.
