Senator Mark Kirk delivers Lincoln Day speech in Toulon

Republican United States Senator Mark Kirk paid a visit to the small town of Toulon yesterday where he was joined by supporters and fellow elected officials during the annual Lincoln Day Luncheon at the Newsroom Bistro.

Following comments from 37th district Senator Chuck Weaver, 18th district Congressman Darin LaHood and others, Kirk began by criticizing the Obama Administration’s approach to handling the Islamic State group.

“We ought to be doing a lot more,” Kirk says. “44 strikes a day, from my experience from the United States Navy — one aircraft (carrier) can do way more than 40 a day. One aircraft carrier will have 90 aircraft aboard, that can do an optempo, which is about twice what the Russians are doing.”

Kirk went on to criticize his Democratic opponent in the upcoming senate race, Tammy Duckworth. Specifically, he attacked Duckworth’s stance on allowing some 200,000 Syrian refugees into the country, what Kirk said was giving “Syrian ISIS forces” an “air force” to invade the United States.

Changing tone, the senator, who suffered a stroke in 2012, stressed the significance of rehabilitation and remaining active for those who have faced similar difficulties.

The luncheon was put on by the Stark County Republican Central Committee and Central Committee Chairman Mike Bigger.
