Illinois budget crisis spells trouble for college MAP grant recipients

Monetary Award Program grants are one of countless items in limbo as the state continues to operate without a budget.

Carl Sandburg College President Lori Sundberg tells Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL the community college will not be floating the estimated $380,000 for MAP recipients in the spring term despite fronting grant costs in the fall.

“The reason for that is that we’re also not receiving our base aid,” Sundberg says. “And we also floated in the fall adult education and literacy, which the state was not paying either.”

Sundberg says adult education and literacy programs have also been suspended for the spring.

Knox College President Teresa Amott says the liberal arts school sees about $1.5 million in MAP grants yearly. She says Knox intends to continue fronting MAP costs until state funds come through.

“We are taking the position that the state of Illinois has made commitments to these young people and we are expecting them to deliver on those commitments,” Amott says.

Monmouth College President Clarence Wyatt’s plans are much like Amott’s. Wyatt says Monmouth College will pay for MAP grants into spring term, adding: “It’s going to prevent us from doing some things that we had wanted to do to be able to move the institution forward. To make some investments that we wanted to make in some strategic areas.”

Monmouth sees bout $2.5 million per year paid out in MAP grants.
