Galesburg Police caution residents about Water Department scam

The Galesburg Police Department has issued a statement warning residents about scammers posing as the Water Department.

Friday afternoon, three local businesses reported strange phone calls from people asking for account information and demanding money. The scammers threatened to turn water services off if payments weren’t received.

GPD Lt. James Bradford tells WGIL people should never give out account information over the phone.

“If they have concerns, they can call that business, that entity themselves directly from a published … phone number and make inquiries to determine if that’s a legitimate call or not,” Bradford says.

He adds that anyone who receives a call that could be a scam should report the incident to police.

“Feel free to call the police department and advise us of these scams so we’re aware of it as well,” Bradford says. “Especially for instances such as this one where we can try to disseminate that information to the public.”

Investigation into the Water Department scam is ongoing.
