205 Board names Ellen Spittell as new member

The 205 Board of Education has named the successor to resigning board member Rick Welty.

Ellen Spittell, a former district administrator, has accepted the board’s offer to fill the remainder of Welty’s term, which expires in April 2017.

A news release from Board President Bob Lindstrom says that Spittell will be sworn in at a special meeting later this month and that additional information about her qualifications will be released at that time.

Spittell was one of six individuals who had expressed interest in the position and Lindstrom called yesterday afternoon to extend the invitation

She tells WGIL she started to consider applying about two weeks ago.

“I think I have a pretty good working knowledge of some of the things that are going on in the district,” says Spittell. “Not a broad knowledge, but I thought maybe I would be able to help.”

Spittell is not sure if she will be voting on proposed district cuts, but the 205 news release says she will be sworn in at the Feb. 23 meeting where the reduction in force resolutions will be taken up.

“Right now I don’t really know what’s on the docket for anything and I think it would probably be premature for me to say anything at this time,” she says, “but I’m looking forward to meeting with Mr. Grimm and the board, see what they’re looking at and try to help in any way I can.”

Spittell was previously the principal of Gale Elementary from 2005-2012.

Before that she was assistant principal and dean at Lombard Middle School from 1996-2005 and holds degrees from Ripon College and Northern Illinois University.

Currently, she is an elementary, curriculum and instruction lecturer at Knox College.
