Washington woman dies following Friday crash on I-74

A 91-year-old Washington woman has been pronounced dead following a Friday afternoon crash on I-74.

In a news release, Illinois State Police say Bernita E. Otto died Friday night at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria.

WGIL reported Friday that high winds caused a semi-truck to blow over at mile marker 19, causing eastbound lanes to close. Otto and a passenger were traveling in the left lane at mile marker 17 when her 2005 Buick struck a stopped Chevrolet pickup truck and pushed the truck into the center median shortly after 1:30 p.m.

Otto and her passenger were both transported to a Silvis hospital, before Otto was taken to Peoria. Information on Otto’s passenger still remains unknown at this time. The driver and passenger of the pickup truck were both treated and released at the scene of the crash.

Friday’s high winds caused five other crashes in the area as well causing damage to property and numerous vehicles.
