205 prepares to discuss coaching cutbacks

The District 205 School Board tonight will take up votes on eliminating ten junior high stipends, re-approving eight paraprofessional dismissals but won’t cut any athletic coaches yet.

Discussion on proceeding with eliminating coaching positions will be taken up though.

Originally the board recommended getting rid of 14 coaches in January and then tabled the vote in February to more closely examine complications, such as ending an entire freshmen or sophomore team by proxy of cutting a coach.

Superintendent Ralph Grimm tells WGIL if the board wants to make slashes to coaching positions the deadline is drawing near.

“If they are going to reduce any coaches from their coaching position, that would probably require a special meeting before the end of the month,” Grimm says.

WGIL reported Friday that Jeff Houston has been named the new Galesburg High School Principal pending the board’s ok.

Grimm says the job was between GHS North Principal Jason Spring and Houston spurred by the process of deflating district expenses.

“It became apparent to us that perhaps we could effect a reduction in the administration at the high school,” Grimm adds.

Also on the agenda is a list of bids to approve for health life safety work including roof repairs at Thiel Gym as well as asbestos abatement at GHS and the Technology Learning Center.
