GAVC Director Jeff Houston transitions into GHS Principal

Jeff Houston was approved by the District 205 School Board at their meeting last night to serve as Galesburg High School principal starting next school year.

Part of the district’s budget reduction process included a measure to eliminate an administrator at the high school by combining the GHS principal’s duties with those of either the GHS North principal or the Galesburg Area Vocational Center Director.

This means Houston who is currently and will continue to be GAVC Director will take on a new stack of responsibilities.

Houston tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL that including his own, 205 employees district wide are having to come together to deal with changes.

“I think every one will be sharing some of the responsibilities outside of what I do,” Houston says. “We’ve got more than qualified people  ready to take that challenge on but it will be a balancing act.”

A particular transition that is taking place is moving GHS North into the main high school campus.

Houston says he wants to do all he can to avoid messing with North’s formula for success.

“We’ve got to make sure we do what we can to make sure they’re successful, whether they’re a college bound kid or a career bound kid. We just need to put some life skills in them either way.”

Houston is working with outgoing principal Roy Van Meter on the leadership transition. July 1 is Houston’s first official day as principal.
