Police and fire departments cautioning safety for Independence Day

Galesburg Police are warning residents to exercise good judgment this Fourth of July and to designate a sober driver for those who plan on drinking.

Motorists who won’t drink are still cautioned to wear a seat belt.

A GPD news release says that wearing a seat belt is the “best defense” against impaired drivers.

In addition to being on the look out for drunk drivers, officers will been searching for passengers and motorists not wearing seatbelts.

Galesburg Fire Department also have a reminder, that it’s illegal in Illinois to sell and use hand-held fireworks.

Banned items include bottle rockets, firecrackers and roman candles.

Violating the Illinois Explosives Act can be a felony with a maximum five years behind bars or a $10,000 fine.

Novelty fireworks like sparklers are allowed in Galesburg but burn at over 1,200 degrees and can cause deep tissue burns if mishandled.
