Galesburg Council to vote on Armory decision tonight

Tonight is the night for a decision regarding the future of the Galesburg Armory.

City Council members are expected to vote on whether they will allocate $3.45 million from a utility tax to fund renovations that would turn the Broad Street facility into a community, event and recreation center of some sort.

While some aldermen have voiced their support to continue the project, others have spoken out against it, at least in its current state. WGIL spoke with each of the seven council members last week.

All but Ward 1 Alderman Angela Bastian gave their stances for or against last Tuesday. The result was a three-three split.

However, in a Wednesday email, Bastian responded, saying the current project has “too many uncertainties” and that the city needs to first fund “repairs and upgrades to infrastructure.”

In other news, Council will vote to accept a bid for the purchase of nine new police cars and two new detective vehicles at a cost of just over $288,600.

Eleven current police vehicles would be taken out of service with the replacement.

Council meets tonight at 6:30 p.m. inside City Hall.
