Signs point to electrocution in Kohl’s construction death

Toxicology results and an official autopsy are still pending in the death of 33-year-old Benjamin Corben who died Friday in a workplace accident on the job site of the upcoming Kohl’s Department Store in Galesburg.

Knox County Deputy Coroner Dan Genty declined to release preliminary autopsy results today, but told WGIL “there’s no mystery” in the death.

Corben was found unresponsive near the base of a ladder where he was working on an electrical panel.

A Galesburg police report says a witness heard a “weird noise” and noticed Corben violently shaking before he fell to the ground. The report also says police determined that Corben “might have been electrocuted,” based on the circumstances at the scene.

Genty says a full autopsy and toxicology report could “take weeks” before the cause of death can fully be determined. Corben was a 15-year OSHA certified supervisor working with Mangieri electric.

According to his obituary, funeral services will be held for the Alexis man tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the Alexis Fieldhouse.
