Moffitt backed ag and vet bills signed by Rauner

Rep. Don Moffitt this week had a trio of bills he’s sponsored that were signed into law by Gov. Bruce Rauner.
The bills all deal with two of the longtime Republican legislator’s central issues, veterans and agriculture.

He was inspired by a letter from Jack Bumann a senior at Alwood High School and a trumpet player who’s been asked to play taps at several military funerals.

Moffitt tells WGIL before the school would count the horn players absent, which would affect a school’s state aid.

“This says it can an excused absence arranged ahead of time,” Moffitt says. “That way there’s a high level of respect and dignity for the deceased veteran and if that is more meaningful for the family, then I think it’s good we did something that will make this more of a possibility.”

Rauner also signed a bill that provides more flexibility in seeking help for addiction treatment and other mental health services.

Moffitt was also present yesterday during Ag day at the state fair when Gov. Rauner signed another bill backed by the Gilson Republican.

For years Illinois has recognized centennial or even sesquicentennial farms.

Moffit’s bill allows the Department of Agriculture to sell to qualified applicants a sign that designates their business as a centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial farm.

Moffitt in a news release says this is a way to “honor and recognize” those businesses.

Correction: This story has been corrected to show that Rep. Moffitt’s bill was HB4318, providing signs to centennial farms. There was a separate bill that recognizes bicentennial farms in Illinois and Gov. Rauner signed that bill at the same event as well.
