Heritage Days entertains and educates at Lake Storey

Living history has once again made its way into Galesburg as the annual Heritage Days continues out at Lake Storey. The yearly celebration began Friday and wraps up today.

Yesterday, a spectacle of time was on display, ranging from early Native American settlements, a rendezvous camp and a Civil War-era camp which included–shall we say–the Battle of Lake Storey as the highlight of the afternoon.

It was a decisive victory for the Union troops, who moved across the field flanking the rebels and ultimately gaining control of the battle grounds in a little under 30 minutes.

Like many, Dan Gillette of LaHarpe was all dressed up in a wool uniform. He acted as a Colonel for the Union blue.

Gillette says he’s attended the Galesburg history celebration many times throughout his 18 years of reenacting. He tells WGIL the battle is entertainment and history all in one package.

“It started many years ago,” Gillette says. “Each time you have an anniversary of the Civil War–100,125th and of course in the last few years it’s been 150th anniversary, each time it brings more people out. It’s our way of entertaining the people, but we’re telling a part of history also, a very important part of our American history was during the Civil War. We’re trying to portray a part of our history and educate the people, as well.”

Despite a few cloudy skies, soldier’s were able to stay dry thanks to the rain holding off.
