Calico Cat expanding into next store front on Seminary Street

Calico Cat, the long running Seminary Street gift shop, will be sprawling into their next door neighbors space soon.

Owner Lori Kohl will actually sign the lease to rent the store front that previously held Xanadu Fashions on the one-year anniversary of her purchasing Calico Cat.

She tells WGIL that Calico Cat actually occupied both spaces in the 1970’s.

“There’s a door way that just needs to be knocked out to reconnect those. It’s a very minor procedure, so that will be pretty easy,” Kohl says. “What I want to do will be to bring it down to wear our cash register is so we can use it for both sides and can see customers on all sides of the store.”

Kohl wasn’t looking to expand but when the opportunity arose last Friday she couldn’t turn it down.

She owns her current space and will start off renting the Xanadu space will a desire to buy later on. It’s a gain of roughly 800 to 1,000 sq. ft.

Other than the usual extra holiday staff Kohl doesn’t see expanding Calico’s Cat’s staff.

Kohl is crossing her fingers to have the added area ready for customers on Sept. 2 but that all depends on when she can get in there to work.

The Kohl family purchased Calico Cat a year ago.

“It’s one year from the date and we’re starting another project,” Kohl says.

Calico Cat first opened on Seminary Street in 1968.
