Hutchings, Burdick, and Jackson awarded at Sandburg Commencement

Carl Sandburg College introduced James Hutchings as their 2018 Faculty Member of the year during the 50th annual Commencement Thursday night at Galesburg High School.

Hutchings serves as an associate dean of humanities and fine arts, and has been an instructor at Sandburg for nine years.

He is involved in the college’s honors program, as well as one of the first instructors to begin teaching in collaborative learning classrooms.

While this is Hutchings first time being named the Faculty Member of the Year, he’s been nominated for the award eight times.

During the commencement, former English instructor, Dr. Norm Burdick was presented with the College’s Distinguished Service Award..

Burdick, taught at the community college from 1980 until his retirement in 2014 – with exception for a school year he taught as part of the Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program.

He  is credited with helping create both the first-day writing sample, and the exit exam given to all Freshman Composition One students. He was named Sandburg’s Faculty Member of the Year in 2000.

Also being honored on Thursday was music instructor Dr. Stephen Jackson with the 2018 Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year.

Jackson has been a music instructor at Sandburg since 2009 and teaches music and string bass at Monmouth College.
