Murder suspect pleads not guilty

A Galesburg man just extradited back to Knox County last week after being arrested a month ago in South Dakota has pleaded not guilty to the felony charges he faced for an Easter Sunday shooting that led to one person’s death.

Knox County Circuit Court records indicate 28-year-old Jonathan Kelly made the plea Monday to three counts of First-Degree Murder, and one count each of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

Kelly allegedly fired a gun during a fight outside Seminary Street Pub early April First. Those shots killed 26-year-old Jenni McGruder, described as an innocent bystander.

Also during Monday’s court appearance, attorney Michael Bianucci of Chicago entered an appearance as Kelly’s attorney.

Kelly is scheduled to be back in court August 6th for a pre-trial conference. He remains held without bond in the Knox County Jail on the warrant he was arrested on.

Kelly is also expected to be in a federal courtroom at some point charging him with being a fugitive from justice, after leaving Illinois and heading to Davenport for a time before being picked up in South Dakota.
