Galesburg council looks over final draft on parks and rec masterplan

Galesburg’s Parks and Recreation masterplan was presented to City Council Monday night.

The recommendations in the plan aren’t guarantees of future projects but would in theory give city council and staff guidelines and goals.

Several recommendations were given in the plan that was drafted by Houseal Lavigne, a city planning firm out of Chicago.

Devin Lavigne presented to the council 11 projects were listed as “high priority” by residents under the condition money is no object.

The top rated item was a “recreational center or a community center”, but Houseal Lavigne pointed out a slight distinction, saying in the plan they used the term recreational center for not just a place for people but that would also house recreational events.

Also listed were completing the trail alignment loop at Lake Storey and including working bathrooms at all parks.

The feedback also showed more dissatisfaction with parks with 58 approving, than recreation programs with 87 percent approved of.

Council is soon expected to approve the plan but it will not be at their meeting upcoming on Monday.
