District 205 holding community feedback meeting for buildings study tomorrow

A community feedback meeting is being held Thursday night by Galesburg District #205 to gain input on district buildings and facilities.

The district’s architect, two years ago, put together options for the board of education for future planning.

“As I looked at those options I think there was a lot of great work that was put into it but my concern was ‘you know every kid goes to the high school and there’s nothing here about the high school,'” said Asplund. “Those of you that have been in the high school know that it was built in 1958, and it looks like it. It could use some updating.”

He says that now that the district has a good two to three years worth of input in their system, the goal behind the meetings is to flush out any additional ideas that may be out there.

The goal is for district’s new architects – Legat, from Moline, to get a running start moving forward and then present to the board in September or October with three to five options.

“How much is it worth to us to do those kind of things and there will be somewhat of an ‘a la carte menu’ that you can kind of go ‘well we have this much money so what do you want to take off that list and try to accomplish to make sure that we have a good building plan going forward,'” Asplund added.

In regards to the high school – an HVAC system overhaul is certainly in the realm of possibility.

But as far as any buildings being closed, Asplund says nothing has been decided – and it would take years of planning and altering of other buildings.

Using a combination of plans put forth two years ago, and feedback from the community, Asplund says Legat will get a jump start on future plans for buildings.

He says he hopes to have a discerning direction for school buildings by the end of 2018.

The Facilities Use Brainstorming Meeting for the Community will be held tomorrow night from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Churchill Junior High School.
