Pearl Jam Explain Why A New Album Is Taking Some Time

Photo Credit: Adam Bielawski / PR PhotosPearl Jam have been taking a long time on their next album, and Jeff Ament cites a reason they’ve never mentioned before in interviews — the death of Chris Cornell in 2017.

Ament tells Rolling Stone, “I think when Chris passed, that’s really been a tough one to wrap our heads around, and then there’s just life stuff… We’ve gone in, probably, four or five times in the last couple of years, so we have a whole ton of unfinished stuff. We’re just sort of in a little bit of limbo. I’m sure everybody’s got a bunch more riffs, and I’m sure [Eddie Vedder has] got a handful of journal lyrics. It’s just going to take us all getting into a room together for six weeks and just knocking something out.”

Stone Gossard adds, “We’re just going to keep plugging away until we get one done.”

Pearl Jam’s last album. Lightning Bolt, was released in the fall of 2013. They did release a new single last year, “Can’t Deny Me,” ahead of their tour dates.
