Bustos, Joy King raising big dollars for 17th District race

Fundraising numbers show Republican Congressional candidate Esther Joy King is off to a strong start in her bid to win the nomination for Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.

Joy King is hoping to unseat Rep. Cheri Bustos, who carries the weight of incumbency and cash on hand into a General Election.

She announced a fundraising total of $167,00 in Quarter 3, which ran from July 1 to September 30.

Bustos’ raised about $655,000 and keep in mind, Joy King is starting from behind.

Democrat Bustos has almost $2.7 million cash on hand, dwarfing Joy King’s $119,000.

Non-profit technology organization, ActBlue, that raises money online for Democrats and progressive causes made up about 44 percent of the number of contributions and 14 percent of total funds raised for the quarter for Bustos.

Similarly, Joy King raised about $24,000 using WinRed, the GOP equivalent of ActBlue.

Republican from Roseville, Eugene Farrell, reported no donations or expenditures for Quarter 3.

Bustos is preparing for what may the most expensive race she’s ever run.

Her $655,000 in contributions in Quarter 3, but for the same period of time in the election cycle two years ago, Bustos raised about $150,000 less for what would prove to be the most expensive race of her congressional career.

Perhaps a better indicator of excitement among voters is how many people are contributing to the campaigns from inside the 17th District.

Bustos received contributions from about 71 individuals who are believed to reside in the District, Joy King received contributions from about 31 individuals.

Ratings of how competitive Congressional districts are from the Cook Political Report classify Illinois’ 17th District in the column, “Likely Democrat.”
