Galesburg council to discuss street division building tonight

The Galesburg City Council could approve an amended agreement with Prairie Forge Group to shift the scope of the city’s Street Division building renovation at their Monday night meeting.

The council rejected bids for the project last month because they came in far over budget. Council discussed rebidding the work, but now.  The preferred option is no longer to construct a standalone office and sign shop building on site.

Rather, a portion of the space would be incorporated into the square footage of the existing storage building and would include a supervisor’s office, bathrooms, locker room, IT room, and break/training room.

Several aldermen stressed the urgency of tackling the project at their last meeting. Aldermen Larry Cox, also a former Public Works Director for the City, says that no other city department has such underwhelming facilities.

Aldermen will also have the opportunity to approve several other items that have been previously discussed.

One of those items would officially create Deputy Chief positions for both the police and fire departments. Police Captain Rod Riggs is taking on that role for the GPD.

That also means the department will have one less captain. Brad Stevenson has been chosen for the Fire Department’s Deputy Chief. He’s currently a battalion chief and the GFD will go from 4 to 3.

The hiring decisions for both jobs lies with the Chiefs of the respective departments.

The Council is also expected to approve Bunker Links Golf Course rates that are adjusted slightly lower than what was approved last month. Season passes will cost $500 with discounts for seniors, juniors, minors, and young adults.
