Former Monmouth College President Haywood dies at 94

The 10th president of Monmouth College, Bruce Haywood passed away on Tuesday, January 7th at home in his sleep at the age of 94. Haywood was the longest-serving president at Monmouth serving from 1980 to 1994 when he retired. He came from Kenyon College in Gambler, Ohio where he was a professor, dean, and provost for 26 years. When Haywood came to Monmouth the endowment totaled $4.4 million and had grown to $24 million in his 14 years. Haywood was a native of Yorkshire, England where he enlisted in the British Army. After WWII, Haywood attended the University of Leeds before moving to Canada where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at McGill University. In 1954, at Kenyon College, he was the first to propose making the college coeducational. In 1981, Haywood’s vision for the college inspired 1956 Alum Walter Huff to donate $250,000 towards a new gym. Two years later, Huff would donate another $5 million towards Haywood’s vision for expansion. Haywood also spearheaded the Monmouth’s Well’s Theater in 1990. Haywood was presented with Monmouth College’s Distinguished Service Award upon his retirement, and the Haywood Business Wing of the Center for Science and Business was dedicated in his honor in 2013. Memorial services are pending. Haywood’s first wife, Gretchen, died in 2003. He was also predeceased by their two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. Haywood retired to Galesburg, Ill., wherein 2008 he married Mary Bailey, a 1976 Monmouth graduate, who survives. Also, surviving is his son-in-law, Andrew Youngquist of Monmouth.
