The Unified Command in Knox County is meeting daily to assess and communicate the needs of the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
One area of focus for the team of community leaders and agency heads is making sure everyone in the community has access to food.
Laun Dunn, Executive Director of United Way of Knox County is leading those efforts.
Several businesses and groups wasted no time to get food out to the community, including GloBar, Boxcar Express, and Defenders of Freedom and more.
Knox County Emergency Management Coordinator Randy Hovind says they’re trying to coordinate food distribution amongst the different initiatives to make sure all the area’s needs are met.
“I have to say that Galesburg is really lucky in the fact that we’re not too large where there’s too much area to cover and we’re not too small that we don’t have a lot of resources,” Hovind says. “We have a lot of resources in the county and city and a lot of those partners have stepped up to the plate to help.”
United Way has also helped to fill another gap in organizing volunteers for food distribution.
The site shows a full menu of opportunities for you to volunteer and gives you an easy way to sign up for a shift.
Right now they’re primarily looking for volunteers to do food distribution for kids at various sites, as well as shifts packing the food.
