Big Bang Boom 2020 4th of July fireworks show canceled this year

Due to the many uncertainties regarding the state of the COVID-19 situation, the organizers of Galesburg’s Big Bang Boom annual fireworks at Lake Storey have announced that the event will not take place this year. Big Bang Boom is an annual event presented as a group effort between the City of Galesburg, The Galesburg Lions Club, 1400AM and 93.7FM WGIL, and 92.7 FM The Laser and is organized and produced by the radio stations. With a looming May 1st deadline to make preparations for the show, WGIL General Manager and event organizer Roger Lundeen said it just wouldn’t have been responsible to hold the event this year. Purchasing the fireworks, gathering sponsorships, organizing food vendors, creating the soundtrack, and working with the City of Galesburg are just some of the preparations that still needed to be made. “Based on the Governor’s orders of Stay-At-Home, we don’t know if that’s going to be extended past June, (and) we don’t know the situation with the parks,” Lundeen said. “More than anything, we thought it was pretty irresponsible to ask big groups of people to gather. Inviting the entire city out to Lake Storey is probably not a good thing. We certainly want to encourage the good health of the community and the only way to do that is to not do the event this year.” In addition to WGIL staff, the event also involves many City employees, vendors, the staff of J&M Displays, and many volunteers from the Galesburg Lions. Big Bang Boom 2020 would have been the 24th Annual Big Bang Boom electronically synchronized fireworks show. The show has never had to cancel and has only postponed once due to weather.
