Galesburg Aldermen approve replacement on pair of downtown sidewalks

Galesburg City Council approved several sidewalk replacements in the downtown area on Monday night.

Illinois Civil Contractors was the lowest and best bid according to administration for both contracts, and they’ll do the work for a total of $223,000.

The sidewalks in question are west side of Prairie Street, from Main to Ferris, and Cherry from Main to Simmons, also on the west side of the street.

Alderman Larry Cox questioned administration why there were no local bidders on the projects they approved last night, except for one bidding on the street division building.

Director of Public Works Wayne Carl responded, “These jobs are just sidewalk jobs and our local bidder is Gunther Construction and they are really too big to bid on sidewalk jobs right now. We did send them a proposal and we don’t have any other local contractors that are interested in this.”

Illinois Civil Contractors and Hein Construction, both approved for contracts last night, are based in the Peoria area.

Aldermen were scheduled to approve a revolving loan for food manufacturer Innovative Proteins, but due to a documentation error approval was tabled until the council’s next meeting.
