Galesburg Council renews animal control contract with Humane Society
Galesburg Aldermen exercised year five of a five-year contract on Monday night with the Prairieland Animal Welfare Center or the Knox County Humane Society.
Council initially approved the contract in 2016 with years four and five dependent on council approval, each year costing about $250,000.
Two Aldermen weren’t enthusiastic about the extension.
Councilmember Larry Cox says that next spring when the contract expires, the city needs to look for less expensive options for animal control services.
“And next year, at the end of this term of this contract, perhaps the proposal that was considered four years ago by the administration can be updated and brought back that I believe was a lesser call or someone can provide this at a reduced cost.”
Cox ultimately voted to approve the extension.
Councilmember Corine Anderson opposed it and said the council needs to review the contract parameters before renewal next year.
Animal control duties involve responding to calls involving situations where an animal is injured, a wild animal is in a home, or any other complaints the City receives.
