Galesburg Police say that on Saturday they witnessed a male shoot himself while officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.
Police immediately began providing emergency medical treatment and called for an ambulance but the male subject was pronounced dead at the scene.
A GPD social media post says they responded to the 1400 block of Day Street in the early morning hours of Saturday.
They observed a male subject with a firearm inside the residence, so officers established a perimeter.
The male subject exited the back of the residence and was confronted by officers, who ordered him to stop and show his hands.
Instead, the individual produced a firearm and shot himself.
Police recovered a firearm from the scene and an investigation continues.
