United Way still serving local community despite tough times

Those few dollars that come out of your paycheck to support a local non-profit are more needed than ever.

That’s essentially what United Way of Knox County Executive Director Ann Tucker-Lockhart says, as the organization continues to seek ways to fund their 19 local human service agencies.

Recently, United Way announced they would be extending their fundraising effort until January 31st. The agency has reached only 67 percent of their $350,000 goal for the year.

Tucker-Lockhart tells Galesburg Live on WGIL, that changes in the local economy have really trickled down over the years.

“It was hard when I started, because that’s when Maytag had left and Butler had left so all of those large incomes if you will were already gone,” Tucker-Lockhart says. “It’s just becoming increasingly harder now to raise funds.”

Tucker-Lockhart cites unemployment from layoffs and furloughs as reasons for much of the recent decline in fundraising.

The money that is being raised though is staying in the community.

“Everything does stay local and it helps everyone here in the community,”Tucker-Lockhart says. “It’s not going to the east coast or the west coast, it stays here.”

Those wishing to give can call 309-343-4434. Tucker-Lockhart says no donation is too small.
