Area celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. today

All around the area, people are celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today and his forward-looking message of racial equality and justice.

At Monmouth College, the celebration begins with a special convocation from noon to 1 at the Dahl Chapel.

Rev. Dr. Teri M. Ott is Chaplain at Monmouth College. She tells WGIL the service will have several choirs as well as a special guest speaker, Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, who she says is, “an extremely sought after pastor, preacher, speaker and leader in the Presbyterian denomination.”

Nelson is the Director of the Presbyterian Church USA Office of Public Witness in Washington, DC.

Ott says people are encouraged to participate in a community service project at 1 p.m. right after the convocation. Volunteers will be packing food for the Kids Against Hunger program that sends food to needy family all over the world.

In Galesburg, a group will be meeting at 11:30 a.m. today at Hi-Lo Grocery before marching to the New Home Missionary Baptist Church.

Also in town, Knox College will be hosting its annual MLK Convocation at 11 a.m. today in the Ford Center for the Fine Arts on campus. There, three Knox faculty will be speaking along with three students. They will be accompanied by a performance of the Knox College Choir.

We’ll have coverage of that along with this morning’s King Day Breakfast here on WGIL.
